Curiosity
Learning starts with a question. We want our products to make it easier to explore a language, understand something new and keep asking questions.
Matomates combines the Japanese verb matomeru, meaning to bring things together, with mates, the English word for friends. The name reflects what we build: useful resources brought together in friendly products.
We bring learning, thoughtful design and community together in products people can use in their everyday lives. We want a new interest to feel welcoming and give people a reason to explore it together.
Our first product, JLPTMatome (opens in a new tab), is a platform for learning Japanese and preparing for the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test. It brings lessons, practice and a community of learners into one place.
These ideas guide the choices we make about our products and their experience.

A shared interest can bring people together. We make room for people to learn from each other and feel part of a community.
People arrive with different backgrounds, goals and levels of experience. We aim to make our work welcoming and understandable.
A little playfulness helps make practice inviting. We look for ways to make the experience enjoyable without getting in the way of learning.
